Ten Questions: Reducing Your Risks
What's Your Risk IQ?
Ten Questions: Reducing Your Risks
The more you know about potential risks, the better prepared you are to reduce or eliminate them. The following questions will help you to do all you can to protect your building(s) and the people in them:
In and Around the Building
1.In addition to installing fire detection and suppression equipment, is the equipment in good working order?
Be sure your property and people are protected by detection equipment (smoke and fire alarms) and by suppression equipment (fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems) that are all in good working order. Maintenance is often neglected.
2.Did you install and do you maintain a burglar alarm system?
A burglar alarm will protect valuable equipment and serve as a deterrent. When you purchase equipment, look for the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) marking to certify that the equipment meets established performance standards. Review your coverage to be sure it is adequate.
3.Do you have a plan in case you lose power?
Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) offer a short-term solution. Consider securing a second source of commercial AC power or install a back-up generator. You may even consider "power-down" drills.
4.Is Your disaster recovery plan a disaster?
Nearly half of the businesses that suffer a disaster do not have a disaster recovery plan. Others have a plan, but key people do not know it exists or how to implement it.
5.Do you inspect service machinery and equipment as recommended by manufacturers?
Inspections include heating, air conditioning, ventilation systems, and more. Well-maintained equipment reduces risk of failure and lowers repair cost when problems are detected.
6.Is your electrical equipment current?
If you see "power trees" and extension cords connecting lots of devices, that is risky. Also, be sure there are no cords around sinks, showers, or other wet areas. If your school is housed in an old building, have a qualified electrician inspect your electrical system.
Computer Equipment
7.Do You back up your computer system daily or weekly and store the backup off site?
If your computer server were destroyed or stolen, could you re-create the data quickly and at low cost or no cost?
8.Did you install anti-virus protection on your server and on each employee's computer?
Hackers are always developing new viruses, so be sure you download the latest version of your anti-virus software.
Etcetera
9.Did you generate a risk inventory that pinpoints potential hazards?
Once you determine the potential hazards, you can start to mitigate them. Make sure your insurance policy covers all potential losses you identify.
10.Do you document everything you identify and store the data offsite in a secure place?
Take photos or a video of your property and equipment. This becomes valuable in the event you need to file a claim.
